New Orleans, Louisiana (NOLA) Schools Energy Saving Audits

Project: Energy Saving Audits of the following schools:

  • International School of Louisiana
  • John C. Dibert Elementary School
  • Pierre A Capdau Elementary School
  • Warren Easton High School

Client: New Orleans, Louisiana (NOLA) Schools

Scope: The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) was asked by Global Green USA, the US affiliate of Green Cross International, to conduct a comprehensive energy audit of the International School of Louisiana, located in New Orleans, as part of its Green Seed Schools program (description available on Global Green's website).

NREL contracted with Celtic Energy, Inc., a long time NREL consultant, who partnered with EMO Energy Solutions to conduct a comprehensive audit in only 30 days. The audit identified many different energy efficiency and renewable energy opportunities which will improve the learning environment for students, and save this school almost 60% of its costs.

CEI also assisted NREL with audits on three other schools, identifying significant HVAC and lighting opportunities.

Energy conservation measures to be implemented include:

  • Upgrade EMS throughout
  • Replace existing 32W Fluorescents with 28 W Lamps
  • Occupancy Sensor Lighting Controls
  • Install Computer "Sleep Mode" when not in use
  • Install Photocell Control Ballasts
  • Replace Fluorescent Fixtures
  • Install permanent window treatments
  • Weather Seal Doors and Openings
  • Solar Water Heating
  • Replace AHU's with Ground Source Heat Pumps (GSHP)
  • Replace Chillers and Install variable speed drives (VSD) on chilled and hot water pumps
