Travelers Insurance Energy Conscious DesignEnergy Assessment and Audit

Client: Pratt & Whitney

Scope: In April 2008, Celtic Energy completed an energy assessment and audit of the 2 million SF (25+ buildings) Pratt & Whitney aircraft engine manufacturing and testing complex in Middletown, CT.

Although the on-site P&W E&HS (Environmental, Health, and Safety) "Energy Team" had been very proactive in implementing energy-efficiency programs, Celtic Energy was able to identify an additional twenty-five energy efficiency opportunities beyond those previously implemented. The range of projects identified includes: Replacing Plant HID Lighting with High Output LED's; Implementing Daylight Harvesting; Installing Computer Power Management System; Expanding EMS Control & Functionality; Extensive VFD Installations; Data Center Cooling Upgrade; CO2 Based Demand Controlled Ventilation; Kitchen Ventilation System Upgrade; Numerous Process Cooling System Upgrades; Compressed Air System Upgrade; and Back-Pressure Steam Turbine Recommendation.

The measures are estimated to generate annual savings on the order of:

  • 18,884,396 kWh of electricity
  • 1,853 kW electrical demand reduction
  • 10,107 MMBtu fossil fuel energy reduction
  • $2,038,112 energy cost savings; $34,981 O&M savings (4.2 yr SP)
